Type 2 Diabetes affects 21 million Americans, and one third of them don’t even know it. Another 54 million, or so, have per-diabetes. Pre-diabetes makes you a high-risk candidate for developing type 2 diabetes. About 40% of the people in the United States age 40-74 have pre-diabetes.

So, would you like to learn more about how to prevent pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes in both you, and your children? Just think of the gift of good health that your children would receive, by teaching them at an early age, how to avoid diabetes and all the issues that diabetes causes.

  1. Learn all you can about diabetes. Learn what it does to your body systems. Educate yourself on how insulin resistance is the basis of all of the chronic diseases related to aging. Knowledge is the key. You have to know how it affects your entire being, then, you can better teach your children.

  2. Help your children make nutritious healthy food choices. Once they understand why nutrition and proper eating habits are so important, it will be much easier for them to practice good eating routines. Make a game of it. Teach them what proteins, carbohydrates, fats, calories and so forth are, and then quiz them.

  3. Drink water. Avoid soft drinks, diet soft drinks, and other highly sweetened drinks. Learn about artificial sweeteners, it may open your eyes. Also, learn about plastics. (use BPA-free bottles and other BPA free products).

  4. Limit the amount of TV, video games, and computer time. Instead, get you and your child active. Go outside and play games, get involved in sports, get physical and challenge your child to stay active and fit.

  5. If you or your child is overweight, lose those extra pounds. It all starts with a good mindset (positive attitude) good nutrition, and physical activity. You can start with smaller more nutritious food portions, at least 30-60 minutes a day of being physically active (5 days a week) and drinking good pure water instead of sugary drinks.

Try these tips and you will be amazed at what you can learn. Not only of the knowledge you receive from research, but of the clear-eyed, good health, and vibrancy of your children. Respect yourself, respect your body.
